10 days to go and we don’t know who will pay for GE?
With 10 days to go until the expiry of the moratorium on the commercial planting of genetically engineered crops (GE),
protestors went to the Mid-City New World on Sunday afternoon to bring attention to the role consumers and businesses
will have to play to protect themselves from GE.
‘The government’s strategy of co-existence of GE-crops and traditional crops has been proven to be nonsense. The
insurance companies have said they won’t insure for GE contamination, therefore the risk of GE has been pushed onto all
New Zealanders. In the end, the companies get all the profits, while the environment becomes their laboratory’ said
protestor Simon Oosterman.
In the end it is the environment, animals and our children who will have to pay. For now, the question that needs
answering is ‘what are we going to do about it before it is too late?’
