Thousands expected at Saturday’s GE Free march
Auckland 10 October, 2003: Greenpeace spokesperson Steve Abel is expecting a big turn out for the GE free march in
Auckland tomorrow. “This is going to be a history making event” said Abel. “Many thousands will turn up and send a clear
public message to Helen Clark in opposition to the lifting of the moratorium.”
Greenpeace co-organised the March in conjunction with Mothers Against Genetic Engineering (MAdGE) and the Auckland GE
Free Coalition (AGEFC).
The march will begin at the bottom of Queen Street at 12 noon and end at Myers Park where the crowd will be entertained
by speakers and musicians, including Don McGlashan and Anika Moa. Speakers will include geneticist Dr Elvira Domissee,
Alannah Currie of MAdGE and Free Range egg exporter Graeme Carrie.
Saturday’s event is the third major march held in Auckland since the report of the Royal Commission in 2001. Previous
events have been well attended with 15,000 marching in 2001 and 10,000 in 2002.
Media congregation point is near the bottom of Queen Street outside number 95, beside the stage from 11.30am. There will
also be a media congregation point in Myers Park behind the stage in a separate marquee.
There are also marches on Saturday in Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, New Plymouth and Timaru.
