Open Letter to Government
Physicians and Scientists for Responsible Genetics has launched an Open Letter to Government requiring the
reinstatement of the Moratorium on the release of Genetically Engineered Organisms (GEOs) into the New Zealand
environment by amending the NOOM Bill.
Only three percent of FRST funding for biological science goes to projects which will eventually lead to the release of
GEOs. Ensuring that GE organisms continue to be kept under the strict controls of laboratory confinement, allows for
medical and other research to continue, with minimal impact on New Zealand research projects and the retention of
scientific manpower and capacity.
PSRG's release of research last week showed that the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification
(RCGM) have been superseded. The research, undertaken by Dr Peter Wills of the University of Auckland, covered relevant
new evidence which has appeared since the RCGM delivered its report. Government needs to look at this vital new research
to ensure New Zealand adopts a responsible, common-sense policy.
The primary consideration of government must be the health and safety of New Zealanders and their environment. Keeping
GEOs in strict containment will preserve New Zealand's worthwhile research options. It will allow conventional and
organic agricultural and horticultural enterprises to flourish, and open up further the growing market for GE free
products.
Most importantly it will protect New Zealanders and our environment without jeopardizing medical and other research.
