New Media Journal Makes Debut In NZ
AUCKLAND (AUT Communication Studies/Pacific Media Watch): New Zealand's Auckland University of Technology has become
the new hub of Pacific Journalism Review, a journal critically examining the media industry in the Asia-Pacific region.
The redesigned and expanded journal aims to contribute to analysis and debate about the media and practice of journalism
in New Zealand and the region.
"The journal has been at the forefront of critical reflections on the role of the media and journalism practice in the
Pacific region," says Associate Professor Barry King, head of the School of Communication Studies, which is publishing
the journal.
"It will continue to serve this role in its new location."
The nine-year-old PJR has moved to Auckland from its previous locations at the University of Papua New Guinea and the
University of the South Pacific, Fiji.
"The journal aims to enhance media ethics," says editor David Robie. "We cover media issues and communication in the
South Pacific, Asia-Pacific, Australia and New Zealand."
Topics such as ethics, accountability, censorship, media freedom, media ownership and professional practice and media
education are examined.
Contributors in the latest edition include independent Australian media commentator John Pilger, Radio New Zealand¹s
Mediawatch presenter Russell Brown, NZ Scoop website editor Alastair Thompson, New Zealand media analyst Dr Wayne Hope,
Guardian Weekly editor-in-chief Patrick Ensor and Guardian cartoonist Steve Bell. This 220-page issue examines Iraq and
the "media war", the Maori media identity in New Zealand, Pacific radio conflict in New Zealand, Australian government
influence on Radio Australia, a comparison of international news coverage between The Australian and the Fiji Times, and
many other regional issues.
The journal will be re-launched on October 3 at the Pacific Islands Media Association (PIMA) annual conference in
Auckland.
