CTU Launches Regional Development Campaign In Invercargill
The secretary of the Council of Trade Union, Carol Beaumont, is going to Invercargill to launch a campaign to boost
trade union involvement in regional development.
Carol Beaumont will be speaking at a regional development seminar in Invercargill tomorrow.
It’s the first of a series of seminars that the CTU is organising throughout New Zealand to inform trade unionists of
the economic initiatives that are taking place in their region.
“The CTU sees regional development as a key issue for workers and trade unions,” says Carol Beaumont.
“We believe that it is the role of trade unions to ensure there is strong and sustainable regional development and that
the jobs created are well paid, skilled and safe.”
“We want to work with companies and enterprises that are benefiting from the Government’s regional development
programmes so together we can deliver those well paid, skilled and safe jobs.”
“This can be achieved through the negotiation of collective agreements, establishing skills training and implementing
robust health and safety programmes.”
"Every region has its own issues and Southland is no exception. We want to find out from the region’s trade unionists
what those issues are so they can be taken up by the CTU locally, regionally and nationally.”
"We believe it is also time that trade unions are represented on local and regional development bodies," Carol Beamont
said.
It will be Carol Beaumont’s first visit to Southland since she became the secretary of the CTU in June.
The seminar has been organised by CTU economic development coordinator, Robert Reid, who will also attend the seminar.
It will be addressed by representatives from Venture Southland.
