Unprecedented campaign against vivisection New strategic approach
An unprecedented campaign against vivisection is now taking place in New Zealand, consolidated over the period of 18-22 August.
Vivisection is the cruel manipulation of live animals for research or teaching. Over 260,000 animals are vivisected on each year in New Zealand.
… Unprecedented coalition of organisations National Anti-Vivisection Campaign (NAVC), Save Animals From Exploitation (SAFE), Animal Rights Alliance (ARA). The Green Party & the Animal Rights Legal Action Network (ARLAN), a national network of lawyers, are also supporting individual events during the week.
… Two major Australasian pro-vivisection conferences to be held in Christchurch, during the same week. ANZCCART conference 18-19 August (Australia & New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research & Teaching). ANZLAS conference 21 -23 August (Australia & NZ Society for Laboratory Animal Science).
… Over 20 anti-vivisection events condensed into one week. Hundreds of activists will stage protests, creative events, information stalls, a public meeting and media conference, in Christchurch during the 18-22 August.
… The first comprehensive report into vivisection in NZ will be released. … Report to be released on 18 August, has been produced by NAVC, SAFE, ARLAN and ARA.
… The anti-vivisection movement is taking a fresh strategic approach. The campaign is focused on two main themes:
a) The veil of secrecy surrounding vivisection must be lifted. This secrecy leads to a lack of scrutiny, duplication, bad process, incompetence, lack of public information and bad science. b) Only 11.5% of vivisection is for medical research. Most vivisection in NZ is for agricultural purposes. Despite contrary claims, this means the vast majority of the over 260,000 animals used each year in New Zealand, clearly do not benefit human health.
