Alliance Support For Wellington GE Rally And March On Saturday 19 July 2003
The Alliance GE Spokesperson Vernon Tile said the Alliance supported the GE Rally and March that was held in Wellington today. It is vital that we stop the lifting of the moratorium on field trials of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which is due to expire on 29 October 2003.
It is only because the Alliance was in Government with Labour that we currently have a moratorium on the release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The Alliance is committed to extending that moratorium and committed to working with other organisations and New Zealanders to make that happen.
Nationally, the Alliance will be supporting and working with other groups and individuals to campaign for an extension of the GE moratorium beyond October 2003.
_The Alliance remains absolutely opposed to the release of genetically modified organisms GMOs unless and until science proves it will not have environmental impacts that will cost New Zealand dearly years down the track. The Alliance strongly believes that the precautionary principle is the best approach.
