~ FRI, 4 and SAT, 5 July - Proposed National Day of Action against US economic and military dominance - Peace Action Wellington brought a proposal to the National Peace Workshops that 4 July (US Independence Day) or 4 and 5 July (to include the Saturday) be National Days of Action against US economic and military dominance, with the general themes (at this stage) of whose independence? - US independence at whose expense? - independence for all. In the cities with a US military or diplomatic presence, protest will be mainly focussed around that. In towns and cities with neither of those, then around a symbolic or actual example of US imperialism, KFC, McDonalds, a petrol station ... Or you could use the day/s to educate around independence, what does it mean for Aotearoa / NZ, what kind of independence do we want, what positive alternatives are there to corporate globalisation ... whatever you like! ~ THURS, 26 June - 'Together against Torture', a seminar to discuss: what international law is in place protecting people from torture and how effective has the 1987 UN Convention against Torture been? How does New Zealand fare in the international scene? Is it supporting regimes and governments that covertly or overtly torture their citizens? How has the 'war against terrorism' impacted on people's rights and freedoms? Refugees, who have experienced torture, will tell their stories and a representative from Amnesty International will discuss the role of their organisation in the global fight against torture, one of the least reported, yet most serious, human rights violations. The seminar convener is Heval Hylan, a refugee from Iraq who is qualified as a lawyer both in Baghdad and in New Zealand, and who works closely with the refugee community and liaises regularly with the government. ~ FRI, 20 June and SAT, 21 June - Maramatanga o te Tiriti o Waitangi / Understanding the Treaty of Waitangi. The workshop is designed for those wishing to start the bicultural journey; it provides an opportunity for people to learn about the Treaty of Waitangi and its relevance to our society, and is designed for people who wish to live a Treaty-based life at home at work and in their everyday life. Participants have the opportunity to reach an understanding of the nature of culture and an awareness of cultural identity, become aware of the pre-treaty history of Aotearoa/New Zealand, study both the Maori and English versions of te Tiriti o Waitangi and discuss the intentions of the Treaty, and become familiar with Treaty related events from 1840 to the present day. Facilitators are Ronni Fitzmaurice, Barbara Cowan and Helen Simmonds (Network Waitangi, Manawatu); Maori Caucus Leaders are Makareta Tawaroa and Kiritahi Takiari. Participants will be provided with folder and copies of documents used in the workshop. Cost is $60 plus GST residential (breakfast and lunch provided), or $50 plus GST non residential (bring your own lunch); tea and coffee provided.
