Building Industry Federation Welcomes Government Proposals
The New Zealand Building Industry Federation (NZBIF) has spoken out in support of the government’s proposed changes to
the country’s building regulations.
Chairman, Richard Carver said the proposals were a significant step in improving the overall standard of the building
industry and would help better inform and protect consumers.
“The Minister Lianne Dalziel has worked hard to get to the bottom of the issues and has worked closely with the industry
over the past months. We are extremely pleased to see such sensible and robust proposals come out of this process.
“The industry supports better building controls and more proactive regulation and guidance around the Building Code. We
are also pleased to see more reliable inspection and code compliance requirements and more competent and better informed
building practitioners. No one can argue with the principle of ‘design and build it right first time,’” said Mr Carver.
“These proposals go a long way in improving current building practices and minimising the risk of failure that we have
recently seen in New Zealand homes”, he added.
The Building Industry Federation believes the government’s proposals further remove the need for increased chemical
treatment of timber framing in New Zealand homes, as is currently being considered by the Building Industry Authority
and Standards New Zealand.
“We encourage the BIA to recognise that these proposals are a significant step in addressing the issues of building
failure and call on them to take an appropriately considered view to the issue of timber treatment as a second line of
defence in New Zealand homes,” said Mr Carver.
