J Day: 'lighting up for liberty'
New Zealand to join over 200 cities this Saturday 3 May, in biggest ever international rally against cannabis
prohibition.
The National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML NZ) is proud to present the 6th annual International
J-Day rally in Auckland, Levin, Christchurch, and Dunedin on Saturday, May 3.
NORML President Chris Fowlie has called for supporters to "light up for liberty" as a protest against unjust and
unworkable cannabis laws.
International J-Day is part of the worldwide Cures Not Wars movement and the Million Marijuana March, which this year
will be taking place in an unprecedented 230 cities around the globe.
"This year's event is even more timely, with the health committee about to release the report of their inquiry into the
legal status of cannabis, which is widely expected to recommend allowing the medicinal use of cannabis," he said.
"United Future seems happy to let patients needlessly suffer and live in fear of the law, but the Government doesn't
need to let them dictate cannabis policy. Medicinal cannabis could be allowed right now, without needing to change any
existing laws."
Mr Fowlie also said that Jim Anderton - New Zealand's own self appointed Drug Czar - had just returned from a UN drugs
conference in Vienna where he voted in support of the continued prohibition of cannabis, and fantasised of a "drug-free
world" by 2008.
German company Knaster Hanf - one of J Day's major sponsors - has donated hundreds of low-THC hemp cigarettes for J-Day
supporters to smoke. "We'll be lighting up for liberty using these symbolic joints which contain real cannabis, but are
perfectly legal", said Mr Fowlie.
J Day Venues: Auckland: now in Albert Park; Levin: Kimberley Reserve; Wellington: Sorry, event cancelled! Christchurch:
Cathedral Square; Dunedin: The Octagon. J Day starts at "High Noon".
J Day Sponsors: Knaster Hanf, Switched On Gardener, The Hempstore, Cosmic Corner, Hydrogarden, RDU FM, Phantom
Billstickers.
