The last sunset at Scott Base, Antarctica will take place on 20 April.
Because the Earth sits on a tilted axis, Antarctica experience compete light during the summer and complete darkness
during the winter. The first sunset this year was on 20 February after 4 months of 24 hour daylight. The winter night
will also last for about 4 months with the sun not rising again until 20 August.
(Photo #1 First Light)
The first light of dawn. Because of the low angle of sunrise, it takes about 30 minutes for the sun to clear the horizon
from the time when the first sliver of light appears.
The vibrant colours are due to particles in the atmosphere scattering the light and the reflection of the sun off the
clouds. This image offers a view at a sunset through some of the cleanest air on earth.
