2003 FILMS SCREENING::
In Response to a release by SPCS.
IRREVERSIBLE and KEN PARK have been to every major film festival in the world and have won awards. They are not smut
films.
BIFF Fee waiver subsidies has been approx $50,000 for the 10 year period. Many films are simply cross rated from
overseas ratings.
35% of films don't go to the Classification Office they go to the FLVB. $5,000 a year to bring acclaimed films into New
Zealand from around the world.
No other film festival in the world even pays censorship fees.
NZ festivals have actually paid out hundreds of thousands in fees that no other film festivals do.
If waivers were pulled then there would be NO film festivals in NZ. None. Nada.
How much High Court / Board of Review time and money did SPCS spend on LOSING five of their cases against films last
year?
Clearly to most this is vexatious behaviour from SPCS.
Anyone who runs a festival will tell you that its not easy to break even let alone make a profit. We don't live all in
Gods shadow nor do we quake in fear at the ol horny one.
We understand that fictional films sometimes represent an unflattering look at life but it is the right of free thinking
adult New Zealanders to CHOOSE whether they wish to see the film in a regulated adult environment. The two films in
question are art films. Not pornography.
This is what The Society of Promotion of Community Standards calls a Festival of Porn and Smut. This is what happens
when you are an uninformed extremist organisation with a chip on your shoulder. Please read about the films yourself and
make your own judgements. I suspect they might not be the same as the SPCS's. Thank you.
