A massive anti-war protest through the streets of Wellington is happening on Saturday, April 12, starting with a rally at Civic Square at 12pm going past the Ministry of Defence and ending at Parliament. The protest continues the wave of actions that have been happening all over New Zealand and the world in opposition to the imperialist invasion of Iraq by United States, British and Australian forces. This protest will give the people of Wellington the opportunity to express their outrage at the killing of innocent men, women and children.
Our government expresses "regret" about the war, but maintains involvement with the US military. The NZ navy frigate Te Mana is currently deployed in the Gulf of Oman and Straits of Hormuz, supposedly to oppose "terrorism" It is na?e, however, to imagine that the staff on the frigate is differentiating between war materiel bound for Afghanistan and that bound for Iraq.
There are NZ armed forces personnel at the US Central Command HQ in Tampa, Florida; and the US led Coalition Joint Task Force in Bagram, Afghanistan. New Zealand is actively providing military intelligence to the United States through the Waihopai spybase in Blenheim. And Helen Clark refuses to categorically deny the involvement of our SAS troops in the current crisis.
Peace Action Wellington demands that the New Zealand Labour Government end ALL assistance to America's war. The Saturday protest will focus on holding our own government to account; the people of this country will not be complicit in this atrocity and thus "END ALL NZ SUPPORT FOR THE WAR" will be the theme.
Peace Action Wellington would like to extend credit to Peace Movement Aotearoa for the use of quotes in this release. For more information on the situation in Iraq, please visit the PMA website: http://www.converge.org.nz/pma
