Momentum gains for STV
Momentum is gaining across the country for the Single Transferable Voting system, with the successful Dunedin referendum
results today.
STV Dunedin is pleased to announce the result of Dunedin’s public referendum of STV versus FPP:

“We are delighted by today’s result,” said STV spokesperson Sam Huggard. “Last year the Dunedin City Council voted
against giving residents a choice – today’s result is a clear message to the Council that the public have a right for a
say in how their officials are elected.”
“STV is now spreading through NZ – already all Health Boards, Wellington and Porirua City Councils, and several district
councils including Papakura and Marlborough District Councils, have adopted STV,” said Mr Huggard.
“We are hopeful that Christchurch, Nelson and Palmerston North will join Wellington and Dunedin and take this
opportunity to achieve a much fairer system of electing their local officials,” said Mr Huggard.
The referendum was a postal referendum held over the last three weeks. This result is binding on the DCC for its next
two elections. Last year, campaigners gathered more than enough signatures to force the Council to hold a public
referendum on adopting STV after the DCC had voted against letting the public have a say on adopting STV.
