Baptists Oppose Prostitution Bill
The National Leader of the country’s 42-thousand strong Baptist community says the denomination is totally opposed to
the Prostitution Bill currently before Parliament.
Christchurch MP Tim Barnett’s private member’s Bill is due to have its second reading tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday).
Baptist leader Brian Winslade says the Bill seeks to remove all controls from prostitution and brothel-keeping, even
down to the ability of Police to keep records or ask under-age girls for proof of their age.
Brothels will be allowed to open alongside schools, kindergartens and churches, and all restrictions on organised crime
involvement will be removed.
Mr Winslade says no other trade will be so totally deregulated in New Zealand, and decriminalisation will have huge
effects on the social environment of most cities and towns. He urges all MPs with any sense of community conscience to
vote against the Bill.
He says the Christchurch City Council was correct to point out this week that councils will not have the powers to deal
with the social effects, and if passed the Bill will open a Pandora’s Box which government won’t be able to close again.
