POWELL¹S DUBIOUS CASE FOR WAR
http://www.fpif.org/commentary/2003/0302powell.html
This newsletter is going out just after Powell has made his case for war at
the UN Security Council. While we haven¹t had time to analyse its veracity
it should be pointed out that Resolution 1441 requires all UN member states
to provide relevant information to the inspectors not manipulate it for
propaganda purposes. We also know the US lied in its justifications for Gulf
War I in 1991 (see
http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,889419,00.html) and that Powell
has systematically lied to support the illegal contra war against Nicaragua
when he was Reagan¹s National Security Advisor (see An open letter to the UN
about Colin Powell http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/HL0302/S00029.htm).
Only last week Hans Blix criticised him for deliberately distorting his
report to the UN (see ³US is misquoting my Iraq report says Blix²
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/01/31/1043804520548.html) Allegations
also cannot override the duty of UN member states to obey the Charter of the
United Nations (ratified in US law) which forbids military force except in
self defence in the face of an enemy attack. It also insists on the primacy
of peaceful means to resolve disputes. ³The parties to any dispute, the
continuance of which is likely to endanger the maintenance of international
peace and security, shall, first of all, seek a solution by negotiation,
enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, resort
to regional agencies or arrangements, or other peaceful means of their own
choice." (The Charter of the United Nations, Chapter VI, Article 33).
