FFNZ: Moth Importer's Fine Inadequate
The $5000 fine imposed on an Auckland man for illegally importing moths is grossly inadequate, says Federated Farmers of
New Zealand (Inc) President Tom Lambie.
"While Mr Hollingsworth will lose some of his weekends to community service the Federation believes a stiffer fine would
have been more appropriate given the potential implications of his actions, said Mr Lambie.
"I hope some of that community work involves dealing with the wrath of Auckland's who are coping with the consequences
of the Painted Apple Moth incursion.
"The Judge's view that Mr Hollingsworth's intention not to sell the moths is mitigating is not supported by farmers.
This attitude reflects a general lack of understanding in the community about the value of New Zealand's biosecurity.
"Given that Mr Hollingsworth is a well educated laboratory technician there is no excuse for his actions. A breech of
New Zealand's border could have a significant and ongoing impact on the livelihood of a large number of New Zealand
businesses and indeed the wider economy. We can not afford to be complacent."
