Senior Trade Commissioner Returns For New Role
Auckland, February 3 2003 -- Trade New Zealand's Senior Trade Commissioner for North Asia has returned to New Zealand,
bringing a wealth of experience to a new role as onshore Market Services Team Manager.
Elizabeth Gollan was based in Hong Kong for three and a half years as Senior Trade Commissioner for North Asia.
A number of new market services positions, including Ms Gollan's role as Market Services Team Manager, have been created
to strengthen onshore support.
Ms Gollan's responsibilities in her new role include debriefings for returning Trade Commissioners, liaison with other
onshore teams, business council liaison, Market Services Manager for Japan and liaison with MFAT and other agencies.
Ms Gollan, a graduate of Massey University and Palmerston North Girls’ High School, is excited about the prospects
offered by her new position, which she took up in November.
“There are so many different market dynamics, idiosyncrasies and cultural issues that New Zealand exporters need to be
aware of. Our onshore market experts have the direct experience in these markets and so can provide invaluable guidance
to exporters before they venture into a new market. We are also up to date with economic changes in the various markets
and can interpret how they’re going to impact on New Zealand’s trade and investment.” Ms Gollan will be aiming to help
companies maintain their market share in countries experiencing tough economic conditions, and to capitalise on growth
prospects in recovering markets. She sees strong opportunities for New Zealand in Japan, despite its continuing sluggish
economy, and reports that the Trade New Zealand Tokyo office is extremely busy with client work in a wide range of
sectors.
Ms Gollan says the keys to success in the role will be building strong relationships and enforcing Trade New Zealand’s
position as the country’s leading authority on export issues.
“New Zealand needs to export to grow its economy. To do this, I always say that you need persistence, perseverance,
professionalism and personality – and for many, the assistance of Trade New Zealand as your partner.”
