~ WEDS, 29 January - WTO - GATS: The next battle against globalisation, launch of 'Serving Whose Interests?' by
Professor Jane Kelsey - a 140 page report report on what the GATS round means for Aotearoa / New Zealand, its public
services and its peoples. How is it that an international trade treaty can take precedence over the Treaty of Waitangi,
the nation's founding document? Why can't the government introduce compulsory local content quotas to television when it
has an electoral mandate to do so? How might local government measures designed to deliver social or environmental goals
be attacked as de facto discrimination against foreign transnationals? The answer to these and more questions lies in
the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) which aims to lock open New Zealand’s (and other countries’) services
to foreign transnationals. Few New Zealanders know that the agreement even exists, let alone that it can impose major
constraints on the right of national and local governments to make policy and regulate our services in the national
interest. Councillor Ray Ahipene-Mercer invites you to attend the launch from 5pm to 7pm, in the Council Chambers, Old

~ FRI, 31 January - 'Jenin Jenin', the documentary produced by Iyad Samudi and Mohamed Bakri Best Film, Carthage
International Film Festival. Where is God? an elderly man desperately wonders when surveying the debris in the
Palestinian refugee camp Jenin. The film, directed and co-produced by Palestinian actor and director Mohammed Bakri,
includes testimony from Jenin residents after the Israeli army's Defensive Wall operation, during which the city and
camp were the scenes of fierce fighting. The operation ended with Jenin flattened and scores of Palestinians dead.
Palestinians as well as numerous human rights groups accused Israel of committing war crimes in the April 2002 attack on
the refugee camp. Banned in Israel, 'Jenin Jenin' is dedicated to Iyad Samudi, the producer of the film, who returned
home to Yamun after the shooting of the film was completed. On June 23, as Israeli forces besieged Yamun, Samudi was
shot and killed as he was leaving a military-closed area with three friends. Screening at 6pm, Wellington Public Library

Moriarty) and 23 inmates in the high-security wing of Christchurch Men's Prison. A short season of 9 public performances
will be held inside the West Wing of the prison; tickets need to booked 5 days in advance through Ticketek at the
Christchurch Town Hall, and a photo ID is required (for security clearance). Proceeds from the show go to charity. For
