LSN Media Release : Beware the silly season on GM - December 30, 2002
Beware the silly season on GM
Reports from the UK that research discloses previously unknown risks with GM canola are wide of the mark and based on an incomplete understanding of the research the Chairman of the Life Sciences Network, Dr William Rolleston, said today.
"The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs study of GM canola from 1974 to 2000 produces no new information or unexpected outcomes.
"A review of the DEFRA study by the Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment makes it clear the results were expected and pose no risk to the environment or human health.
"New Zealand commentators who seek to make capital out of error ridden newspaper reports from the UK should study the full report and the ACRE commentary," concluded Dr Rolleston.
