Kyoto Signature Welcomed

The Environmental Defence Society today welcomed New Zealand’s ratification of the Kyoto climate change Protocol.
“Adapting to a carbon constrained world is not going to be easy but one of the hardest steps may well be the first, said spokesperson Garry Law.
“Once the incentives to reduce emissions are in place and the market in emissions starts to work, the opportunities for reductions may well prove better than have been predicted by some. That has been the experience with other emissions trading schemes.
“It is only with Kyoto ratified that these opportunities will start to emerge. Its operation will build confidence for the greater cuts in emissions which are needed in the future.
“The business push for delay and renegotiation was always wrong-headed. Canada proved earlier this year there was no opportunity for that. New Zealand has got a good deal in the Protocol.
“The Government has proved they are pragmatists on details of domestic policy. Ratification now is undoubtedly the right move to give time for adaptation to the Kyoto requirements, but there are details of domestic policy still to be settled. Expanding the coverage of countries with commitments was another vital challenge.
“This is a milestone but the journey goes on said Mr Law.
