Steve's Idea Of Success Sucks
On last night's TV one news Mr Maharey defended his government's performance by proudly telling us that CYFS has more
social workers today than in the history of the organisation, said Lindsay Mitchell who is calling for a review of the
DPB.
"His excuse for CYFS constant failures was that reports coming in are way above what was forecast. It is a sobering
thought that whilst one government department is predicting the level of child abuse another is paying people to have
children."
"Only weeks ago Mr Maharey was defending CYFS over the Jules Mikus debacle. Yesterday, three adults were convicted in
Dunedin on various charges of failing to provide the necessaries of life, wilful neglect, wilful ill-treatment and
manslaughter. The victim this time, a 23 month-old baby girl."
"Will we very soon have to once again witness Mr Maharey explaining why CYFS got it wrong ?" asks Mitchell.
"My sympathy lies with the Minister because he knows that he is dealing with real lives, frightening, painful lives,
and ultimately, lost lives. But surely he must be doubting the wisdom of encouraging more family dysfunctionality
through a welfare system that pays couples to separate, that sets up teenagers in state houses if they have a baby, and
makes having a succession of partners easy."
Mitchell finishes, " CYFS will never get on top of the problem because the department of work and income are busy
growing it as I write."
