Not ‘If’ But ‘When’ For Four Weeks Leave
“The question of four weeks annual leave is not ‘if’ but ‘when’”, said Council of Trade Unions secretary Paul Goulter
today.
Paul Goulter said it was good news that the Government had decided the issue should sent to the select committee.
“It is appropriate that the proposal to extend minimum annual leave to four weeks is debated in the select committee
along with other holidays issues,” said Paul Goulter.
“There is widespread support for increasing the minimum to four weeks and there is also a widespread expectation among
employers that it will happen.”
Paul Goulter said there was likely to be wailing from some employers, saying the advent of four weeks annual leave would
impact adversely on the economy, including unemployment.
“We heard that wail about the Employment Relations Act, nationalisation of ACC, paid parental leave and increases to the
minimum wage,” he said.
“The reality is that those pieces of legislation have gone through and the economy still continues to run at high
levels.”
