Massive GE Free Rally shows opposition still strong
An estimated ten thousand plus people marched in saturday’s GE Free Rally, showing opposition to GE release is as strong
as ever despite a year of government smokescreens on the issue.
Beginning at Aotea Square, marchers filled Queen St for over an hour as mums, dads, kids, and people from as far away as
Wellington and Kaitaia marched for a GE Free New Zealand.
“ For the second time in a year, thousands of people have marched in the rain to say we want New Zealand’s agriculture
and environment to stay GE free,” said Steve Abel, Greenpeace campaigner.
“ This is a clear message to the Government and the biotechnology industry from the people of New Zealand – Helen Clark
must take notice.”
Greenpeace, Mothers Against Genetic Engineering (MAdGE), GE Free NZ, Green Gloves and other members of the Auckland GE
Free Coalition all took part in the rally.
The colourful parade of banners and costumes ended in Albert park where people were entertained by Trinity Roots, the
Topp Twins, Golden Horse and speakers including Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey, Allanah Currie and MC Slave.
