Farmers Celebrate 25 years of protecting Private Land
Federated Farmers has congratulated the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust on 25 years of protecting New Zealand's
private land for public good.
The genesis of the National Trust lay with Federated Farmers, and was established to encourage and promote the
provision, protection and enhancement of open space for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of New Zealand.
The Federation is proud to be a co-sponsor of a function to mark the National Trust's Silver Jubilee hosted by Her
Excellency the Governor General, Dame Silvia Cartwright this evening, said Federated Farmer's President Tom Lambie.
"An individual commitment to sustainability and the mindset of cherishing the land for future remains fundamental to
farming.
"The National Trust's success lies in having gained the trust and support of landowners and their commitment for the
ongoing care and management of landscape.
"The concept of Open Space Covenants, which enable landowners to protect their land for future generations while
retaining ownership, was ahead of its time.
"Covenanting private land through the National Trust is one of many ways conservation can be achieved through private
initiatives. The success of the Trust clearly shows that protection can be achieved without regulation or Government
ownership."
