Engineering an Underclass
New Libertarianz Deputy Peter Osborne says that a forthcoming Social Policy Conference, welcomed by Steve Maharey, "will
further advance Labour's quest to maintain an underclass - and to do it without the public realising that they are being
socially engineered."
"I am convinced it is in the interests of the Labour-led Government to maintain a social underclass, as this is where
the bulk of their votes come from," says Osborne about the Social Services Policy Research Conference to be held in
April next year. "The necessary trick is to make sure this underclass remains as it is, without the members of that
underclass realising that it is government policy that ensures the maintencance of the status quo. Next year's
conference will only set about reinforcing this stranglehold."
"Labour's policies for 'Closing the Gaps' and for 'redistribution of wealth,' coupled with a smorgasbord of levies,
taxes and restrictions on business and personal property, have together severely eroded the basic freedom of New
Zealanders to choose and to take control of their own direction in life," says Osborne. "Successive governments have
fooled the public into believing that they - the government - are the defender of the down trodden, yet it is their
policies that are the direct cause of an increasing poverty problem."
Osborne says that successive governments have also tightened their control over the education system, effectively
restricting alternative teaching methods and ensuring that children are taught only what the government wishes. "They
have created a higher level of welfarism, which is an increasing burden on the productive, while ensuring that an even
larger number of people remain unemployable. And the more unemployable people there are, the more votes there are for
those politicians promising more welfare."
The Libertarianz deputy leader concludes that another conference to discuss social policy is simply an expensive waste
of time. "Libertarianz social policy is that we have no social policy. It is not the state's role to decide how members
of society may interact with each other, professionally or privately, and nor is it any of their business. They have no
business choosing for everyone else what parts of society are more important than others. Social interaction does not
need to be controlled, especially by a bunch of lifeless wowsers."
