COMMUNITIES OPPOSE POLLUTING INCINERATOR
Friday, September 13, Auckland:
Communities in South Auckland, together with Greenpeace advise that a public meeting is being held to discuss the unlawful operation of the Auckland airport incinerator. The incinerator is polluting people and the environment with dioxins and other chemicals.
The meeting will be held on Monday 16 September, at the Puka Puka hall, Canning Crescent (behind WINZ), Mangere Town Centre, starting at 7pm.
The incinerator is jointly owned by Auckland International Airport Ltd and Tredi NZ Ltd. There are cheaper, safer and cleaner methods of treating quarantine waste, such as steam sterilisation. Steam sterilisation is used at Wellington airport and at seaports around New Zealand to treat quarantine waste.
Dioxins are some of the most toxic chemicals known to science, they cause cancer, birth defects, diabetes, interrupt the hormone and immune systems. There is no safe level of dioxin, yet authorities have allowed the incinerator to breach its resource consent condition limits on dioxin for over two years.
Communities are urging Auckland International Airport Ltd to make an immediate commitment to close down the incinerator and to change to steam sterilisation treatment within 12 months.
