MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE,

“Senior Doctors Vote No Confidence In Auckland District Health Board Leadership”
“Senior doctor national representatives have unanimously adopted a resolution of no-confidence in the leadership of the Auckland District Health Board,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today. Mr Powell was reporting a resolution of the Association’s National Executive today.
The resolution states:
That the National Executive views with alarm the developments and crisis of leadership and values at the Auckland District Health Board and the failure of the government to recognise the seriousness of the situation that threatens the quality and viability of health services in Auckland. In particular, the Executive calls on the government to:
1. Immediately disassociate itself from the derogatory attacks of the Board chairperson on DHB staff.
2. Dismiss the current Board chairperson.
3. Instruct the Board to require the Chief Executive and his senior managers to abandon their autocratic and destructive style and to actively and effectively engage health professionals in all levels of decision-making.
“The Auckland District Health Board’s crisis of leadership and values is disastrous for both Auckland and the rest of New Zealand. Only the government can take the necessary measures to sort this disaster out,” concluded Mr Powell.
