Chief Executive And Secretary To The Treasury - Intention To Resign
The State Services Commissioner, Michael Wintringham, confirmed today that Alan Bollard had indicated his intention to resign as Chief Executive and Secretary to the Treasury in order to take up the role of Governor of the Reserve Bank.
Dr Bollard was appointed Secretary to the Treasury in 1998. He has had a long and distinguished career in the public and private sectors, including roles as Chair of the Commerce Commission (1994 - 1998) and Director of the NZ Institute of Economic Research (1987 - 1994).
Mr Wintringham said he was pleased that Dr Bollard's special talents in economics and management have been recognised through his appointment to the Governor's position.
"Dr Bollard is well respected by business leaders. Although this move means a loss for the Public Service, Dr Bollard will continue to make a positive contribution to New Zealand through his management of the Reserve Bank.
"Under Dr Bollard's leadership, the Treasury had improved its relationships with government, other departments, and the business community.
"Internally, he has led the effort to redesign the Treasury to improve its capability and the range and quality of its advice provided to the Government."
Mr Wintringham said he would move quickly to appoint an acting chief executive for the Treasury, and an announcement was expected next week.
"The process to appoint a new Chief Executive and Secretary to the Treasury will begin shortly. This appointment process is likely to take some time, as it will be very important to ensure the right candidate is selected for this challenging and pivotal role," Mr Wintringham said.
