FFNZ Seeking Detailed Briefing on Possible GM Contamination
Federated Farmers of New Zealand (Inc) is seeking a detailed briefing from MAF regarding the possible risk of GM
contamination in the maize seed grown by Pacific Seeds.
"The Federation wants to satisfy ourselves that the event will be dealt with appropriately," said Grains Council
Chairman Hugh Ritchie.
"This incident highlights that there are effective risk management systems in place that work. The Federation is pleased
to see the swift action of Pacific Seeds, MAF and the Environmental Risk Management Authority.
"It would appear that all seed from the crops in question, as well as the left-over seed, is being held in secure
storage, and will be destroyed.
"As a hybrid seed crop the seed production protocols would ensure that this crop would have been isolated from other
crops to ensure purity. This means the possibility of cross contamination with other crops is highly unlikely.
"I have spoken to Pacific Seeds this morning and believe they have taken a very open and responsible attitude. Which is
exactly what we would expect as arable growers and seed producers. This attitude is vital for the ongoing credibility of
our industry."
