~ before 6 August - send a message of solidarity and support to the Kobe Port Council against A and H Bombs (Kobe Port
Gensuikyo). The Kobe Port Gensuikyo is composed of trade unions in the Port of Kobe, where the nuclear-free 'Kobe
Formula' has successfully prevented the entry of nuclear-armed warships into the port for the past 27 years in the face
of US government pressure to allow such ships into the port. KPG are about to celebrate their 1000th '6 & 9 Action', held every month to commemorate the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to demand the total
elimination of nuclear weapons and to support the Hibakusha (survivors of the US nuclear bombings). Send your message of

~ 6 and 9 August - 57th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (for related listings, see

~ WEDS, 7 August - National Day of Action in Australia to protest against food irradiation, it is the date that public
submissions close for an application to irradiate tropical fruits (see http://www.converge.org.nz/pma/subdex.htm for
more information about this). The Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) acknowledge the inherent dangers of
irradiated food , yet are still recommending that the application is approved. If you're planning on doing something
here in Aotearoa / NZ to mark the day, or would like further information about food irradiation, please contact Kerrie

the fight against global poverty and injustice. Young people will be sponsored or collect donations for the cleaning

Zealand documentary photographers - Bruce Connew, Glenn Jowitt, Terry O'Connor, Gil Hanly, Nicola Dove, Bryn Evans,
David Gurr and Louise Hyatt - who were invited by VSA (Volunteer Services Association) to embark on two-week
photographic assignments in the countries where VSA sends volunteers - South Africa, Tanzania, East Timor, Laos,
Cambodia, Samoa, Bhutan, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tokelau, Vanuatu, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
