Withers’ Support Timely – Paul King
Tuesday, 23 July, 2002
Banks Peninsula Candidate and Number 11 on the ACT list
Today’s announcement from Norm Withers regarding his support of the ACT Zero Tolerance Policy is timely, Paul King said today in Christchurch.
“In The Press today it was reported that recidivist burglars and car thieves aged 16 are not eligible for prison under the supposedly tougher new sentencing laws from Labour. Once again Labour’s tougher stance on crime has been proven to be a front, effectively giving these 16-year-old offenders a free-reign.“
“This is a totally inexcusable oversight. To have created a loophole like this when the consequences are so dire seems ridiculous. The large number of victims who could potentially be impacted have every justification for anger and frustration. These 16 year olds have to be given the message that their behavior is unacceptable.”
“The ACT Party supports victims in their desire for justice. We wouldn’t allow these people to escape without facing the consequences of their actions,” Mr King concluded.
