Gender Pay-Parity Not A Right

Published: Tue 9 Jul 2002 01:51 PM
Rosslyn Noonan said today "Women have a 'right' to equal pay." "Why?" asks Libertarianz spokesman Sally O'Brien. "Where did this 'right' come from?"
"The only genuine rights people have are to life, liberty and property," declares O'Brien, Libertarianz spokesman to deregulate welfare. "That is they have the right not to be deprived of their life, not to be deprived of their freedom and not to have their rightful property taken from them. That is it."
"Rosslyn Noonan does not understand 'rights,'" argues O'Brien, who offers a quick lesson. "Rights set our legitimate boundaries of action - each has equal rights. No 'right' can impose a duty on another - such an imposition is the hallmark of slavery, not of rights. Nobody, therefore, has the right to goods or services, or the means to the purchase of such, if it confers coercion on another individual."
"Unfortunately," continues O'Brien, "this is the premise upon which modern society operates. We are awash in a sea of bogus 'rights' enforced at somebody elses expense."
"Wage levels are set by voluntary agreement," notes O'Brien. "Any woman is free to pursue the level of remuneration she desires and believes she deserves. Equally, the employer must also retain his own freedom to pay what he thinks is a fair wage to the right worker. "
"What it comes down to is Rosslyn Noonan believes the Law should force employers to pay what SHE wants them to, rather than what their own judgement tells them they should. This is unjust and unacceptable,:" says O'Brien. "The Human Rights Commission does not undersand the 'rights' it purports to protect, and is exposed as just another coercive tool of government. Beware the wolf in sheeps clothing!"
"It's enough to make you vote Libertarianz!"
