The Council of Trade Unions has welcomed today’s announcement of new Government spending to better forecast skill shortages.
“More information is needed to ensure that skills shortages can be avoided,” said CTU secretary Paul Goulter.
“The CTU supports workforce development discussions in industries so that emerging skill shortages can be addressed.”
However, Paul Goulter said more was needed to address skill shortages.
“Investment in training and retraining, better pay rates to attract people and involving workers and their unions in improving how work is organised are also needed to address the issue of skills shortages,” he said.
“Immigration to fill gaps has only a selective and temporary role in plugging skill gaps.”
