Auckland Rail Deal A Lunatic Rip-Off

Published: Tue 14 May 2002 10:50 AM
"$81 million for the Auckland rail network is the most lunatic rip-off using other people's money that the Labour/Alliance government has undertaken to date" announced Libertarianz Leader and Tauranga Candidate Russell Watkins today.
"Can anyone seriously believe that spending $81 million of tax-victim's money on a rail network that wasn't going to close is anything but a monument to the stupidity of politicians who, childlike, just want to play with a big train set?" asks Watkins exasperatedly.
"The value of Tranz Rail in its entirety is around $400 million - with the exception of the Other People's Money (OPiuM) addicts in Auckland local government, nobody else thinks that the Auckland portion of the rail network is worth anything near $81 million. It is obvious that nobody would willingly pay even 10% of that price for the lines, but Clark, Cullen, Anderton and Gosche are obsessed with running everything and using your money to pay for it."
"However, the last laugh is with Tranz Rail's shareholders Fay Richwhite, Canadian National Railways, and others. They've pocketed nearly $17 million as a special dividend the Tranz Rail board declared after the first installment of $75 million was paid. This government loathes the successful and productive, and gave these foreign businesses a big tax-victim funded payout," points out Watkins.
In conclusion, Watkins stated that "a Libertarianz government would urge the sale of the Auckland rail network, along with the eventual sale of the state highway network and the removal of the government from the provision of all transport infrastructure. A Libertarianz government would let people spend their own money on the transport they want."
It's enough to make you vote Libertarianz!
