“Increased funding for state housing will make a huge difference for low-income families," said Council of Trade Unions
president Ross Wilson today, in response to the Government announcement of a $186.8 million housing package.
"Improving housing conditions are crucial if we are serious about reducing
poverty and improving families' quality of life,” he said.
“Housing costs make up a large part of a family's budget and too many low-income workers can only afford to live in
overcrowded, poor quality houses."
Ross Wilson said that living in substandard housing had significantly negative impacts on health and therefore education
and employment.
He said it made sense for Government to invest in extra state houses.
"Also welcome is the announcement of money for specific areas with pressing housing problems, such Northland, East Coast
and the eastern Bay of Plenty,” said Ross Wilson.
“This funding housing package will also bring valuable jobs and opportunities for trade training into those regions."
Ross Wilson also applauded the Health Housing programme which aims to reduce overcrowding and therefore the spread of
infectious illnesses in Housing NZ homes.
“Dealing with overcrowding will not only improve children's health, but also the struggle parents face juggling their
paid work and looking after ill children."
