Animal rights activists say Shampoo company tortures animals
"I hope they lose hundreds of thousands of dollars"
A Wellington animal rights group says Procter & Gamble, makers of Pantene shampoo, are one of the biggest animal testing companies in the world. Activists from the
Animal Liberation Front claimed they had placed contaminated bottles of Pantene shampoo on supermarket shelves this
morning to mark World Day For Laboratory Animals.
Spokesperson for Wellington Animal Action Mark Eden said "We understand why Pantene shampoo was contaminated today, and
we support any actions which cost 'animal abusing' companies money as long as no people or animals are harmed. Millions
of animals are tortured and killed every year in pointless experiments and companies like Procter & Gamble are entirely to blame. I hope they lose hundreds of thousands of dollars because of this action."
"In Proctor and Gamble's cosmetic and household product testing, caustic chemicals are forced into rabbits' eyes and
applied to their raw, shaved skin. Laboratory workers lock the rabbits in restraining devices so they are unable to move
while chemicals burn into their eyes and skin. The rabbits are given no sedatives or painkillers to ease their
suffering. They sometimes break their necks and backs in a desperate struggle to get away. Those who survive are used
again...until they are finally killed. Proctor and Gamble's innocent victims include rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and
ferrets. Even though these tests are not required by law, Proctor and Gamble insists on continuing this torture" said Mr
Eden.
"These so called safety tests are done for profit. P knows that animal testing is not an accurate way to judge a products safety in humans. They do it because it is cheaper
than carrying out real safety research" he said.
"P claims to be a world leader in researching humane testing methods. But the reality is that P spend more money in seven days of advertising than it has spent in years of research into "alternatives' to animal
testing. Many companies manage to develop new products without shoving chemicals down the throats of rabbits so there is
no reason why P can't stop testing right now".
