Creative New Zealand Welcomes Government’s Innovation Strategy
“Globally, creative industries are growing faster than any other sector of industry. Creative New Zealand welcomes the
Government’s recognition of the creative industries as a high-growth area in its Growing An Innovative New Zealand
strategy,” says Creative New Zealand Chair Peter Biggs.
“We look forward to continuing our work with government partners to ensure outstanding New Zealand arts and artists play
a key role in this strategy.
“Innovation and risk-taking have always been at the core of artistic practice and this has placed artists at the centre
of the creative industries. Recent research undertaken by Creative New Zealand shows the extent to which New Zealand
artists are cultural entrepreneurs. They work across a range of artforms, developing and applying their diverse skills
both within the creative industries and the arts sector.
“Lord of the Rings, which drew on a range of New Zealand artists from jewellery makers to musicians, designers and
actors, is just one example of the way artists are integral to the creative industries.
“Creative New Zealand has long recognised the importance of the creative industries. It is already working with other
partners to develop tools that support the growth of this sector and help these cultural entrepreneurs to navigate their
own career paths.
“The Growing An Innovative New Zealand strategy has placed creative industries at the forefront of New Zealand’s
economic development. This Government’s commitment, along with its vision of working in partnership with industry, is
the catalyst needed to ensure the potential of New Zealand’s creative industries is realised.”
