Glenda Hughes, a prominent media and management consultant and former top sportswoman, has been selected unopposed as
the National Party’s candidate for the Rongotai Electorate. She has also been nominated as a list candidate.
Glenda has worked as a media and management consultant for the last 12 years advising many companies and organisations
as well as a large number of New Zealand’s top sportspeople. Prior to that Glenda spent 18 years in the NZ Police and
has also been involved in successful rehabilitation programmes for serious offenders.
Many will also know Glenda as a former New Zealand shot put champion, 1982 Commonwealth Games representative and 1985
Captain of the NZ Track and Field Team. Glenda has also participated competitively in softball, basketball, power
boating, netball and power lifting.
National Party Rongotai Electorate Chair, Susie Akers, stated that “The electorate is delighted we have attracted a
candidate of such high quality as Glenda to represent National in this year’s election. We think Glenda will be a superb
candidate and a very effective MP. We are looking forward to running a strong positive campaign”.
National Party President Michelle Boag said “The party intended to fight hard in the Wellington Region and believes that
Annette King is vulnerable in Rongotai because of the current state of crisis in the NZ health system.”
“Glenda Hughes is a strong candidate with immense experience within New Zealand’s criminal justice system and she
understands in a very practical way the major issues confronting the voters of Rongotai. The National Party is delighted
to have her as part of our 2002 campaign.”
Michelle Boag noted that the imminent selection in Ohariu-Belmont, to be held on 10 March 2002, would complete
National’s candidate selection for the Wellington metropolitan area.
