~ 10 November - Questioning the theology of violence: God is our refuge and strength? An all day seminar as part of the Anglican Pacifist Fellowship (NZ) national conference (9 to 11 Nov). Discussion with speakers including Professor Bill Hodge, University of Auckland Law School on A Crime or an Act of War?; Dr Chris Marshall, Lecturer at the Bible College of New Zealand on the Biblical tradition of human rights; Dr Nicola Hoggard-Creegan, Lecturer in Theology at the Bible College of New Zealand on Theological Reflections on Violence; Father Terry Dibble, parish priest and Lecturer at the Catholic Institute of Theology on Peace in a Contextual Theology. ~ THURS, 15 November - The Peace Foundation's 18th Media Peace Awards - celebrating some of the best, constructive journalism of the past year and including the '3rd Like Minds' Awards, with guest speaker Gwynne Dyer. Gwynne is a Canadian journalist syndicated in over 150 newspapers around the world including a dozen in Aotearoa. 7-30pm at the Maidment Theatre, tickets $15/ $25 waged available from the Maidment Theatre (09) 308 2383. ~ FRI, 16 November - 'The Frontline - the search for truth in time of war' John Pilger's 1983 documentary on the role of the media in reporting on wars from the Boer War to the Falklands, screening on Triangle TV at 7-30pm. ~ THURS, 22 November - 'Warspeak and the Media - managing illusion', a one-day public forum on the role of the media in the representation of the 'war on terrorism', speakers include John Campbell (TVNZ), Cameron Bennett (TVNZ), Finlay McDonald (Editor, The Listener), Malcom Evans (NZ Herald cartoonist), and Joe Glen (TVNZ, Te Karere), and more ... 10am to 3pm in the Study Centre Staff Lounge, Massey University, Albany. ~ SUN, 25 November - International Day of Solidarity with Palestine and the Palestinian People symposium, with a wide range of speakers, screening of video documentaries, the day's event will conclude with a performance of Dabkah (traditional Palestinian dance). A Palestinian meal will be served at approximately 8-15pm when the Muslim participants are joined with to end the day-long fast (Ramadhan). From 1pm to 9pm, at the University Marae, Wynard Street, The University of Auckland. Free entry but koha would be gratefully accepted to assist with costs.
