Tauranga Libz delighted with Mayoral vote
New Zealand's fastest growing political party the Libertarianz was extremely happy with the 4.3% of the vote their Mayoral candidate Russell Watkins received in the 2001 Western Bay of Plenty elections.
Speaking last night, Watkins' campaign manager Mike Gordge said: "550 votes, and not one single one of them under any illusions whatsoever as to what Libertarianz are about!"
Indeed not! Watkins colourful campaign brought to mind the words of Johannes Brahms who, when leaving a room, apologised if there was anyone he had yet to offend.
The 4.3% vote is tantalisingly close to the 5% threshold for central government elections, and Bay of Plenty libertarians are now looking forward excitedly to the parliamentary elections next year - in which Watkins is standing in Tauranga. "The down side?" says Gordge, who contends that libertarian ideas on individual rights, property rights, and freedom from government interference sell like "hot muffins": "Another 45,000 muffins to make. But damn, they're good muffins."
It's enough to make you vote Libertarianz!
