World’s Longest GE Free Sandwich in Wellington
At Civic Square October 6, 1 pm
Wellingtonians are invited to enjoy the longest GE Free Sandwich in the world at Civic Square October 6 - National GE Free Day.
Pandoros Bakery is donating the bread while Soulfood Organics is providing the fillings for the mammoth, 50 metre long sandwich.
The sandwich will be delivered to Civic Square at 1pm.
The sandwich is part of GE Free Wellington activities which aim to provide an opportunity for locals to voice their support for a GE Free City.
Wellington people will be able to register their homes as GE Free on a national register and will be invited to spell out GE Free in human letters.
“This day is a chance for Wellingtonians to express their concerns about the release of GMOs into our food and environment,” said Edwin Dando, spokesperson for capital GE Free. “Many New Zealanders want this technology to be wisely and responsibly used within the containment of the laboratory. Currently our environment is GE Free and we want to keep it that way”.
“A GE Free Environment policy would not stop medical and scientific research and development using gene technology but would confine all genetically engineered organisms to contained laboratories” said Dando.
“We eat the bread we make every day and our children eat it too! We are concerned as individuals and a company about the long-term effects of genetic engineering on our food and eventually on our bodies and the environment. We say ‘Keep GE in the lab and off our tables!” said Anita McIlhagga of Pandoros.
Capital GE Free thanks Pandoros and Soulfood Organics for their support of a GE Free Environment Aotearoa/New Zealand.
