“PSA commends the Department of Conservation for being upfront and making the results of their Workforce Diversity
Survey known” said Richard Wagstaff, PSA national secretary.
While the findings of the survey highlight a number of serious concerns, the department is taking steps to address the
problems. “We do not tolerate discrimination in the workplace and we’ll work with the department to ensure policies and
practices are put in place to eliminate all forms of discrimination” says Richard Wagstaff.
The PSA is involved in two projects that were a direct result of the survey when it was completed in 2000. One relates
to the participation of women and the other, focuses on the representation of Maori within the department.
“Both these projects are intended to address the issues that were raised by staff in the survey” said Richard Wagstaff.
“PSA will also be involved in the developing a diversity training module for managers.”
“Every employer needs to take the time to examine what is happening in the workplace and check out how well their
policies comply with ‘good employer’ and human rights provisions”.
