Libz Unequivocal On New Abortion Pill

Published: Mon 3 Sep 2001 02:21 PM
Libertarianz health deregulation spokesman Dr Richard McGrath today explained his party's stance on the soon-to-be-available 'abortion pill'. "My party supports abortion on demand," he said. "While realising that most women do not choose this course of action, it is better that the procedure be available legally, rather than driven underground."
"As a government we would respect a woman's sovereignty over her own body, including her right to seek an abortion, and so would not act to regulate the importation and distribution of any so-called 'abortion pill'. "Libertarianz endorses the comments of Graham Capill, who highlighted the absurdity of a French court's ruling that there is a right not to be born," added Dr McGrath, who also disclosed that he is a certifying consultant for the Abortion Supervisory Committee.
"Unlike Rev Capill, however, my party holds that regardless of personal views on abortion, no politician has the right to violate a woman's inalienable right to terminate her own pregnancy within the first twenty weeks, and possibly beyond.
"It is high time the Abortion Supervisory Committee accepted that we have de facto abortion on demand in New Zealand. My party believes this statutory body should be abolished, along with the whole certifying consultant structure, as it impedes women's access to abortion services. There is no reason why other consumer groups could not act as health watchdogs.
"The most hideous aspect of the whole abortion process in New Zealand is the manner in which Rev Capill - and thousands of others strongly opposed to abortion - are forced as taxpayers to fund these operations in public hospitals.
"Libertarianz are the only party that would remove the provision and funding of health services from under the state's umbrella. Every woman should be free to procure an abortion if that is her wish; however she should not be able to force others to pay for it."
It's enough to make you vote Libertarianz!
