Capill's Disability/Abortion Comments Offensive

Published: Wed 29 Aug 2001 08:37 AM
"The Christian Heritage Party is making offensive comments about Nazism and reproductive choice in the context of so-called "wrongful life" cases."
"ALRANZ would like to make it clear that we support choice in this particular context. We believe that if a woman and her partner decide that they want to continue the pregnancy, then any intellectually, physically or compound disabled child should receive anti-discrimination law protection, advocacy services and community care. However, this must be distinguished from terminations of pregnancy in the context of severe life-threatening medical conditions"
"If an embryo or foetus cannot survive, then abortion may be preferable to a short-term existence in agonising pain. As someone with deceased intellectually and physically disabled cousins, I find Capill's comments grossly offensive." said Craig Young, Research Officer for the Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand today.
