***ECO-BRANCH OF NZ LABOUR PARTY WANTS A GE FREE NEW ZEALAND.***
The Mt Albert Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party has set up a new branch with a focus on environmental issues. The
new branch is to be known as the "Eco-Branch".
At its inaugral meeting held Sunday 19th August 2001, the founding members discussed environmental issues of concern
* Genetic engineering and the findings of the Royal Commission(RCGM)
* Sustainable development
* Auckland transport
The Branch seeks to have input into Labour Party policy and to be an effective lobby group for promotion of
environmentally sound policies.
There was an overwhelming and unanimous concern shared by the members about the risk GE posed to New Zealand's economy
and lifestyle. Members resolved to push for a Genetically Engineered Free New Zealand. This is in relation to foods and
crops and uncontained GE experimentation.
The meeting discussed three outcomes it would like to achieve:
1)Extension of the voluntary moratorium since the RCGM has canvassed evidence,public opinion and values.A more regulated
term of five years for the moratorium to continue from the end of October 2001.
2)Support and visioning New Zealand's geographic and demographic uniqueness as a primary organic nation for it's
economic and cultural future.
3)An emphasis,following the RCGM,upon our nation's values,quality of life and nurturing a wisdom economy.

The next meeting will be held on the 9th September 2001.
