~ 23 to 27 August - national speaking tour by Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane, successor to Archbishop Desmond Tutu and outspoken critic of what he calls ‘economic apartheid’ - debt repayment to institutions like the World Bank - speaks about the tragedy of debt repayment on the African continent, and the fact that South Africa continues to pay the debts incurred by the apartheid regime. ~ WEDS, 8 August - access to justice meeting, with Matt Robson Minister of Courts and Corrections, and Nandor Tanczos, Green Justice spokesperson. The meeting is for all people especially for those who want to have their say about the proposed rise in court fees and other issues around access to justice for people on low incomes, from 6pm to 8pm, at the People's Centre, 2 Lukes Lane, off Courtney Place.
~ FRI, 10 August - Lantern Floating Ceremony, with guest speaker Marian Hobbs and music by Japanese Women's Choir, followed by lantern floating in the Civic Square pool between library and City Art Gallery. Join us in floating peace lanterns to remember those who died in the nuclear bomb attacks on Hiroshima (6 August) and Nagasaki (9 August) and in hope for a nuclear free world.
