ALRANZ: Abortion Access Unaffected

Published: Fri 3 Aug 2001 01:03 PM
"It is puzzling that Right to Life New Zealand wants to view the alleged abandonment or deferral of an inquiry into the current abortion law as a victory for the anti-abortion movement." Craig Young, Research Officer for the Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand said today.
"While ALRANZ would have preferred investigation and streamlining of our current formal abortion access criteria, women do have wide scope for abortion access under the current interpretation of the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act. Meanwhile, in the past few years, SPUC and Right to Life NZ parted company over the Status of the Unborn Child Bill, "Pro-Life Times" (a four-page anti-abortion PR glossy) replaced "Humanity" and medical abortion will shortly be available as a safe and legal option for New Zealand women."
"I can see why the anti-abortion movement would want to maintain its illusions. It has little else left."
