Wellingtonians to Protest in Solidarity with anti-G8 Protestors in Italy
Between July 19-21, politicians from the G8 (the seven richest countries in the world, plus Russia) will meet in Genoa, Italy, with some of the world's most powerful businesses. Economic decisions affecting the lives of millions will be decided in secret. But just like the WTO/World Bank/IMF summits in recent years, this meeting is not going to happen without tens of thousands of protestors making their voices heard.
Besides the massive demonstrations planned in Genoa (where the G8 are reportedly to hold their meeting on an aircraft carrier offshore!), solidarity actions are being planned worldwide, including in Wellington. Activists are holding a rally in Cuba Mall on Saturday, 21 July at Noon. Speakers will talk about the G8 before staging street theatre in the form of a G8 football match.
With none other than Monty Burns as the referee and Mike Moore as a cheerleader, the G8 "all-stars" will take on "People United". There's also the chance of a guest appearance by Helen Clark supplying half-time oranges to the G8 - but not to the people!
The action has been organised by a diversity of activist groups and individuals in the Wellington region including Anarchists, Tino Rangatiratanga advocates, student organisations and others.
