Greens Empower The State - Trade Empowers Citizens

Published: Thu 3 May 2001 12:44 AM
"Green MP Ian Ewen-Street's claims that farmers should be 'wary of the WTO' demonstrates the Greens believe only in empowerment and sovereignty for the state, not for citizens, and a complete lack of understanding of free trade's benefits." says Libertarianz International Trade spokesman Scott Wilson. "Free trade is good. The WTO decision was a victory for free trade, for New Zealand farmers, and also for US lamb eaters who can now once again buy the world's best lamb at the world's best prices. Everybody wins!"
"Greens are against free trade. They are in favour of the import barriers that the recent WTO decision against US tariffs overturned," notes Wilson. "This exemplifies how the WTO can sometimes ensure that producers in small countries can fight big-brother import barriers by big countries like the US."
"Incredibly, Mr Ewen-Street claims 'trade should be between willing partners and should never be forced' says Wilson shaking his head in disbelief. "This is EXACTLY what the WTO promotes," he points out. "But the Greens are AGAINST trade being between willing partners -- they are consistently in favour of government restricting what people can and can't import, and imposition of tariffs on things they want people to pay more for."
"Mr Ewen-Street," concludes Wilson, "is a hypocrite."
The Libertarianz support unfettered free trade.
